Jerelyn Hanrahan

The Art League of Long Island is pleased to announce that Jerelyn Hanrahan will helm the Art League’s popular Summer Pre-College Portfolio Development Program beginning the Summer of 2020. Having traveled, lived and taught abroad, and now back in the states, Oyster Bay native Jerelyn Hanrahan’s well-rounded experiences as an artist and instructor at leading institutions will bring an element of excitement to the studio setting. College-bound teens will benefit from Jerelyn’s insights into the college admissions process.

Jerelyn Hanrahan began her artistic career at the University of Maryland, and in 2002 she received an M.F.A. from the School of Visual Arts. She coordinated the Sculpture Department for Temple University, Tyler School of Art in Rome, Italy, and taught arts at the Muthesius Academy in Kiel Germany. In 2019 she was Chair of the Art Department for Usdan Summer Camp for the Arts, coordinating guest artists, program development and hiring a progressive staff of professional artists. Jerelyn Hanrahan has been active as a professor within academia since her return to the United States, teaching at St. Johns University, New York Institute of Technology, Nassau Community College, Long Island University, and Suffolk Community College. Her professional experience includes teaching sculpture and installation, drawing, painting, Graduate courses in Computer Arts, and lectures on art historical and contemporary art practice. She brings an informed, intuitive and accepting approach to teaching, enabling students to find their personal voice within their work, offering them the personal skills they need to celebrate and facilitate that vision. Her students thrive in the working environment she provides and gain confidence within their art practice. Her classroom environments focus on skill and personal vision. The studio is energetic, open, informed, yet experimental and accepting. Jerelyn maintains communication with a worldwide spectrum of her students, continually advising them and celebrating their success.

She continually curates exhibitions, and was nominated as President of the Sculptors Guild of New York, where she curated Insite, the first sculpture exhibition on Governors Island. She has served on academic admission committees, coordinated artist lectures series and panel discussions and has traveled and exhibited internationally. She has been interviewed on three occasions for the PS1 / Museum of Modern Art radio station, and on National Public Radio with Margo Adler, the BBC in New York and London, Telli ¬Bern in Switzerland, Air Canada in Toronto and on Havana T.V. in Cuba. Her studio and curatorial work has been favorably reviewed by Sculpture Magazine, The New York Times, Newsday, neue bildende kunst, Time Out Magazine, the Village Voice, NY Arts, the Brooklyn Rail, Tages Anzeiger, Kunst Bulletin, Art Observer, as well as many local newspapers and numerous international publications. Hanrahan’s drawings have been exhibited in the Aargau Kunsthaus, in Switzerland, and the Venice Pavilion, in Venice, Italy, and Beijing, China. Her drawings have also been exhibited at Galerie Rohmer Apotheke in Zurich, Switzerland, and in a solo exhibition at Art Magazin, Rolf Muller in Zurich. Andreas Zust published her book of 97 drawings entitled Notations On A Trek. The book release was accompanied by a solo exhibition of drawings at Art Magazin, Rolf Muller, Galerie in Zurich, Switzerland, and a reading of the text by Max Blagg at the Drawing Center in New York.
