What attracts artists to each other…is it love, sex, secrets, similarities in cultural background or artistic styles? Does one serve as muse to the other? Do they support each other equally or is there an imbalance? Does money and fame drive the relationship? In this presentation, we will cover husband and wife artist couples with mainstream values to those marriages that preferred a more bohemian lifestyle. There are also artist teams of parent/child, siblings, mentor/student and unconventional friendship.
No matter the relationship, these artists are permanently intertwined in their place in art history making their private lives as intriguing as the art they created.
Debbie Wells is a museum curator, photographer, graphic artist, and Past President of the Art League of Long Island. Wells is a graduate of Parsons School of Design and active Artist Member of the historic Salmagundi Club in New York City. [Title] => Focal Points Virtual Artist Talk Series: The Collaboration of Michael Krasowitz & Wendi Weng [OnlineRegistrationDescription] => This artist talk by Michael Krasowitz and Wendi Weng centers around their evolving collaboration that spans dance, performance art, painting, fashion and installation. Their separate practices are linked through an intuitive improvisation that centers around a purity of expression. Michael's work deals with the deconstruction of myth to "reset" the initial inspiration in order to visually express archetypal ideas. Inspired by the exercises of the surrealists, Michael created his own visual language - a variation of Asemic writing - which became the basis for his early imagery. Automatic drawing is an essential element in his work. To subvert the conscious mind, Michael employs a technique called "Trompe L'Esperit” (or fool the mind), to create art that transcends the individual intent. Wendi first began studying Western and Chinese classical dance as a young child. She has traveled extensively throughout the Middle East and North Africa researching the dance styles of those regions. Wendi is among the first generation of belly dance practitioners in China, where she has won numerous awards and competitions. Her performance and teaching is infused with the spirit of Zen (Ch'an) meditation and Sufi devotional practice. [Title] => Focal Points Virtual Artist Talk Series: Toxic Nature Studios [OnlineRegistrationDescription] => " Toxic Nature Studios features environmental photography that celebrates the majesty of nature and laments its demise, in small moments. Using close-up macro techniques, the photographs express an appreciation for and concern about the environment. As we become increasingly distracted by our devices, we tend to overlook small disasters beneath our feet. Likewise, we can fail to notice the beautiful moments present in nature, and conversely in the rust, decay, and textures of everyday objects. All photos are taken with an iPhone - leveraging the power of technology to observe rather than to distract. I take photos every day, no matter where I am or what I’m doing. I don’t go out to take pictures; I take pictures because I’m out. " Scott Schneider will introduce us to his process, sharing his photography and sculptural work that explore environmental and conservational themes.
