In the Art League of Long Island’s second presentation of “The BIG Picture”, six artists have been selected by exhibition juror Dr. Charles A. Riley II to receive awards of excellence and honorable mentions. The six winning pieces are among 33 works on display in the Art League’s Jeanie Tenglesen Gallery through April 24. The exhibition is a visual feast on a grand scale, with works ranging in size from 3 feet to 8 ½ feet, including paintings, mixed media works, collage, woodcut printmaking, and fiber art. In addition to selecting the award winners, Dr. Riley selected the 33 works from among 255 submissions from the Long Island area.

Honorable Mention winners: Beth Atkinson, “Kaaterskill Falls (Black and White)” (101h”x45”wx1”d), Woodcut print; Joyce Kubat, “Red 1”, Ink and acrylic on paper; Mary Jane Van Zeijts, “Harbor Reeds”, Oil.

The reception originally scheduled for Wednesday, March 11 has been canceled, with a rescheduled date and time to be determined. Dr. Riley is scheduled to host a gallery talk on Thursday, April 2 at 7:00pm, where he will discuss his selections. The gallery exhibits and events are free and open to the public.

About the Juror: Before becoming Director of the Nassau County Museum of Art, Dr. Riley had a long association with the Museum as both a curator-at-large and a presenter of lectures in conjunction with the Museum’s exhibitions. As a curator, he contributed to the museum’s Picasso, Surrealism and Abstract Expressionists exhibitions, Dr. Riley has also curated exhibitions in Taiwan, Berlin, Amsterdam, Lausanne, New York and on Long Island. Recently, Dr. Riley published his latest book, “Free as Gods: How the Jazz Age Reinvented Modernism,” bringing the number of books he’s authored to 32. Other books include “The Jazz Age in France,” “The Art of Peter Max,” “Art at Lincoln Center,” “The Arts and the World Economy,” “Color Codes” and “The Saints of Modern Art.” His next book, a study of Rodin in Chinese and English, will be published by the Chimei Museum. Dr. Riley’s monographs include those on Ben Schonzeit, Fritz Bultman and Peter Max, with most published by Abrams. As a sought-after guest commentator on the art market as well as other topics, Dr. Riley has appeared on CNN, NBC, MSNBC, CBS, ABC and Fox News. Born and raised in Manhasset, Dr. Riley is a summa cum laude graduate of Princeton University and received his Ph.D. from The Graduate Center of CCNY.
