Discover the luminous world of cyanotype with award-winning artist and educator Christine Donnelly. This playful, hands-on course introduces one of the earliest photographic printing processes — no darkroom or specialized equipment required. Cyanotype is approachable, experimental, and enjoyable for artists of all experience levels. No prior knowledge needed!
Participants will begin with an overview of cyanotype’s history and its exciting contemporary applications. From there, we will explore the fundamentals such as mixing chemistry, coating paper or fabric, and developing prints using UV light exposure. Students will create a variety of prints using natural materials, paper stencils, and more.
The course will also include demonstrations and explorations in wet cyanotype, bleaching, toning, double exposure, and mixed-media enhancement. Students will also experiment with collage, stencils and post-printing techniques to push the cyanotype process in new and expressive directions. There will also be opportunity for further experimentation with unique printing surfaces such as book pages and upcycled boxes to create truly original works of art.
Cyanotype invites experimentation, offering endless ways to explore and expand the process. By the end of the course, participants will leave with a collection of original prints — along with the skills and confidence to continue creating cyanotypes at home.
