DIRECTOR’S CORNER

"What art offers is space, a certain breathing room for the spirit."
- John Updike

July 2013

Our recent art exhibit at Acura of Huntington, “Driven by Art”, was quite a success. The Art League takes pride in bringing artistic works of the talented Art League community beyond the walls of the League and into public venues throughout Long Island. Expect to see more cooperative exhibits in the comingphoto/portrait year. Many thanks to Acura of Huntington for providing such a lovely space and for sponsoring the 7-day cruise to Alaska for two to the winner voted Best in Show, chosen by visitors to the exhibit. Antonio Masi won the top prize for his painting “Morning Ride”. Congratulations Antonio!

I look forward to participating in the upcoming seminar happening at The Amsterdam at Harborside, titled the “Business of Art” where I will be speaking about “Art as a Marketing Tool for Business”. Please join me and my esteemed colleagues Dr. Michael Schantz, Regina Gil, and Angela Susan Anton, at this free, informative event on August 8.

Lately you may have noticed The Art League working with many local and (some not so local) businesses who, through cooperative programs, are helping raise funds for the Art League’s many programs and activities. These cooperative programs are a win-win situation for all concerned. Participation is free, you just need to avail yourself of the various programs to obtain discounts, and the sponsoring organization donates a portion of the proceeds of your transaction to the Art League. In this tough economy, every little bit counts and we need your help. Please sign up today!

Beat the summer heat, stay cool in a class or workshop in our air-conditioned studios! Visit our classes online at www.artleaguelir.org.

June 2013

These last six months since joining the Art League have been an exhilarating experience. I have gotten to know many of the wonderful people who make the Art League hum. Seeing you in the studios, at receptions, at Art After Dark, and at the Art in the Park Fine Art & Craft Fair reveals the great love and commitment we all have for the Art League.

Our instructors are a major part of the fabric that holds the Art League together. I’d like to take this time to congratulate six of them right now for their recent outstanding accomplishments in the art world. Nanette Fluhr has three paintings that are part of a six-city national museum tour of American Realist Painting in China, which began in September 2012 and ends this December. Donna Moraff was recently awarded first place at The Phoenix Gallery Portrait/Figure Show for her pastel portrait “Black & White”, and was awarded second place at The Phoenix Gallery Spring Awakenings Show for her watercolor floral “Glorious Glads”. Denis Ponsot is off to Tuscany to teach Tuscan Landscape painting workshops June 29 through July 6. This July LaMantia Gallery in Northport pays homage to award-winning watercolorist Ward Hooper with a retrospective exhibition spanning 20 years. Susie Gach Peelle has been selected as the Town of Oyster Bay’s “Woman of Distinction” in the category of Arts for 2013. Stan Brodsky is part of the AB-EX/RE-CON: Abstract Expressionism Reconsidered exhibit showing at the Nassau County Museum of Art through June 16. On April 27 independent curator Kenneth Wayne, Ph.D., presented a talk on Stan Brodsky and his current work in abstract expressionism.

Art League students can feel confident in their studies knowing they have such talented instructors!

Thank you,

Charlee Miller, Executive Director,

Art League of Long Island
