October 2013

What an exciting slate of events we have for you this month! Where can I start?

The Art League is proud to have this month’s Art After Dark be an Arts Alive LI Classic Signature Series Event. It promises to be an evening of great fun with David Miller’s “Exquisite Corpse”. David will guide attendees in an interactive visual arts game similar to the old parlor game “Consequences” which the Surrealists adapted to create whimsical group art creations. We are also happy have internationally acclaimed watercolorist Jean Haines join us again at Art After Dark. To those of you not lucky enough to have registered and gotten into her now-full two-day workshops, you can catch her for a few hours as she demonstrates her distinctive technique. Our participating artists are exhibiting a variety of mediums for your viewing pleasure, and Denise Romas will be on hand to entertain you with her acoustic guitar.

A couple of seminars and lectures associated with the Art League are coming up soon. I’m happy to once again be participating in Round 2 of the Business of Art Seminars, which the Art League is co-sponsoring. The Art League is hosting a free seminar on Estate Planning, what you need to know to protect your work as an artist or an art collector. John J. Roe III, Esq. and Christine Schiebler, Esq. of Roe Taroff Taitz & Portman, LLP will present the seminar on October 27 at 4pm. Don’t miss this valuable (and free!) advice on planning for an often overlooked asset. Thanks to Sue Peragallo, our Gallery Coordinator, we’re thrilled to have received a grant where we can offer a free lecture from the New York Council for the Humanities titled “Art in Food and Food in Art”. In keeping with the Feast or Famine exhibit on display in the gallery, food writer and lecturer Peter G. Rose will incorporate images of works by the 17th Century Dutch Masters in her talk about food practices in Colonial times.

Our 58th Annual Members’ Exhibition is just around the corner, and time is running out to apply for a spot to display your work in the gallery. The deadline is October 25. Also, we need to hear from our exhibitor/vendors regarding the Holiday Fine Arts & Crafts Fair being held on December 7 & 8. The deadline is November 11, which will be here before you know it. Apply for your space now, this is a great show that has bringing in lots of people for 50 years.

We’ve been nominated to be on the short list of potential winners under “best art school” category in the Long Island Press’ Best of Long Island contest. Now we need your help and get out and vote for us as your favorite art school. You can vote once a day per category, so vote early and vote often!

September 2013

Many thanks to our wonderful Art League community for coming out in full force to support our recent Open House, held August 24. The Open House offered visitors a peek at the goings on at the Art League, coinciding with the opening reception of the ALLI Instructors’ Exhibition 2013. ALLI instructors Beth Drucker, Gea Hines, Libby Hintz , Mary Nagin, and Stephanie Navon Jacobson demonstrated their artistic techniques to the many attendees at the open house. Thanks also go to Jeff Frohman of Murphy’s Music for providing the delightful musical performances by Patrice Mullen, Janice Buckner, and the Artesian Guitar Quartet of James Erickson, Laura Lessard, Harris Becker, and Andrew Falino. Come visit the gallery to see the beautiful works made by our many talented instructors, now showing through September 22.

Our 18th year of Summer Art Adventure just wrapped up and we were happy to welcome 350 young artists and teens to a summer they will never forget! Creative art projects tailored to specific age groups provided for a stimulating and enriching experience. Kudos to Janet Ganes, Director of SAA, Christine O’Malley, Assistant Director of SAA, and Richard Ganes, Teen Portfolio instructor, for their hard work and flawless efforts in making this year’s program such a success.

September brings many exciting events to the Art League’s gallery and studios. Join us on September 15 for an art reception and lecture to benefit the Arthritis Foundation’s “Women on the Move” program. On September 20, the Art League’s “Digital Art Experience” introduces the relatively new cutting edge art form with live demonstrations by David Miller and Brian Richardson, as well as an artists’ reception of works by young, emerging digital artists on display in the Strolling Gallery. And after a summertime hiatus, the long awaited Art After Dark returns September 27. Art After Dark is a great opportunity to learn more about the Art League while enjoying the company of arts-minded individuals.  Peruse the website to learn more about these events.

Please come visit the Art League, I look forward to seeing you in the galleries, at our events, and in our studios!
