OPPORTUNITIES ABOUT TOWN

THIS JUST IN FROM CELEBRATE ST. JAMES:

Celebrate St. James – Past – Present – Future is a recently formed organization in the Smithtown area whose mission is to “preserve and celebrate St. James’ rich history and inspire an appreciation and knowledge of the arts in our community.” Our goal is “to revitalize St. James as the flourishing hamlet it once was by bringing the cultural arts to our community to drive economic growth.” We have had great success involving the community in our well attended cultural activities, and would like to invite your organization and its artists to join us on Sunday, May 5th for a celebration of the arts – “ART WALK.” (rain date 5/19)

Participation is for professional and emerging artists in visual, three-dimensional, and performing arts. Below is a flyer about the event, and an application. Please share this information with your membership. There is a $25.00 fee for participation, and artists are welcome to sell their works with no commission to our organization.

Great partnerships are always accomplished with like-minded organizations and people. As the new “kid on the block” we would like to extend our hand in friendship and with a goal towards working to achieve our common mission – that is to bring the cultural arts to Long Island.

WE LOOK FORWARD TO JOINING WITH YOU –
AND HOPE THAT YOU WILL JOIN WITH US AT ART WALK.

Call to artists from the Huntington Arts Council: Submit your work by Feb. 25 to “Bright Colors, Bold Strokes: Creations of Lowbrow Art” with juror Ben Owens. Lowbrow started as an underground visual art movement that arose in the Los Angeles, California, area in the late 1970s. It is a populist art movement with its cultural roots in underground comix, punk music, tiki culture, and hot-rod cultures of the street. It is also known by the name pop surrealism. It continues its rich history with such publications as Juxtopose, Hi-Fuctose, and Carpazine.

Lowbrow art often has a sense of humor. Sometimes the humor is gleeful, impish, or sarcastic. HAC invites you to be influenced by acid house flyers, advertising, animated cartoons, circus and sideshow culture, graffiti and street art, kitsch, kustom kulture, mail art, pop culture, psychedelic art, retro Illustration, pulp magazine art, toys for adults, notably vinyl figurines, among many other things.
